Hello,

I searched and did not see a thread for this. I have three Tivo's, all Series 2. The whine from the HD from the Tivo in our bedroom is driving us crazy. It spins 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Is there a mod (hardware or software) to tell it to power down the hard drive when it isnt recording something? All three of my Tivos have upgrade kids from Weaknees installed including the PowerTrip (not that this matters but I am throwing it in there to be complete). Two of my Tivos have dual hard drives, the other one a single drive.

Seems like in this "Lets All Be Green" world, there should be a way to make these things sleep when they are not in use. They suck quite a bit of juice (I am thinking, tell me if I am wrong).

Thanks,

dave

Sorry, but there is no 'mod' to do this....you can put your unit in standby, but that really doesn't do too much. The TiVo has no idea when your TV is on or off and it is buffering at all times.

Thanks for the reply. You would think they would build this in as an option. Having a computer run 24/7 is not a good way to conserve energy and the Tivo is "smart" enough to know when it needs to record something. Guess from the perspective of watching TV and being able to go back to the beginning of the program even if you are not recording this would not work but a nightly "sleep" cycle seems like it would be a good idea, i.e. tell the Tivo that we never really watch TV after 10:00 pm till 7:00 am so if it is not recording, and no one is using the remote, power down the hard drives.

Anyway, thanks again for the reply.

Cheers,

dave

Right - but TiVos also need to receive signals at all time from the network for things like online scheduling and OS updates, so it gets pretty complicated to have it "listen" but not be active.
