Gray screen after "Welcome! Powering up..."

I have a TCD540800 which is a few years old. Yesterday it randomly restarted itself and after the "Welcome! Powering up..." screen, it goes to a gray screen and sits there forever. I have tried cycling power a number of times, but it always goes to the gray screen. I have tried leaving it on the gray screen for a while, but if I leave it there long enough it starts making some chirping sounds.

I've replaced the hard drive once already with a new one from WeaKnees less than a year ago (December 2006). The fan is working and when I opened it up, there didn't appear to be any loose connections.

I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions.

Is the gray screen solid gray? Are you able to determine where the chirping sounds are coming from? IF it's your hard drive, that could indicate a bad drive, although a solid gray screen is often a sign of something other than a drive.

Yes, it is a solid gray screen. Not sure where the chirping is coming from.
