Commercial External Storage for Series 3?

Will any eSATA hard drive work as external storage for my Series 3? I found a site that said the Series 3 would recognize the drive by pushing the select button during power up and then pushing "6" and "2". If so, what are the pro's and con's of an external storage vs. one of your internal drive expansions?
