Is it possible to perform the upgrade using a laptop with an internal drive connected using a USB hard drive enclosure?

We've never gotten that to work well. The USB drivers for Linux just add a level of complexity to the process.

How about a USB-IDE cable you can get at newegg.com (BYTECC BT-200 USB2.0 to IDE Cable With Power Adapter)? Check it out here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812156101

You'd need to load Linux USB drivers - those aren't on our CD. Frankly, we've never tried, so we don't know if it's possible.

The usb drivers are on the weaknees_sata.iso (http://www.weaknees.com/weaknees_sata.iso), although usb upgrades haven't been tested. You can give it a try if you feel like going outside the tested envelope.

Run listdrives after you've booted up the CD and see if your usb attached drive is showing up. It will probably show up as /dev/sdX for some X=a,b,c,...
