  • Formating e-SATA drives

I am trying to understand what formatting is needed to hook up an eSATA drive to an HR20-700 or HR 21. As I understand it, the DVR will do the needed formatting on the initial hookup to the DVR. Is this correct?

I have also read on dbstalk forums that one can take an eSATA drive that was in an enclosure and had been used as an external drive and install it internally and the DVR will recognize it and keep all the recordings that had been made when the device was an external drive.

    Is this correct?

Thanks for your thoughts on this?

That's basically right. The drive needs to be fully tested, and we recommend only using AV drives in good enclosures.
    Been here a long time . . .

The drive will self format. I just upgraded to a 750 gb with no problems. If you disconnect or power off the ESATA drive after pulling the plug oh the HR21 it will boot from the internal drive again.
