Swap Directv Tivo from two different units

I have a RCA DVR40 with a bad tuner. My sister gave me a hughes DVR40 with a bad hard drive can I just put the RCA Hd into the Hughes and turn it on or do I need to format the new drive? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

You really should use the "right" software for each of those units, but, in actuality, that should work fine. You may have a problem with future updates, and you'll need to clear the Error #51:
