What would be the recommendation for an APC unti for the TIVO? Is the BE350G a good choice? Thanks.

Sure - 350 or larger is plenty. Just don't plug the TV in there also.

Considering that these APC units don't communicate with the TIVO and go through a shut-down process in case of a prolonged power failure, what's the advantage of using a battery backup unit vs a good surge protector?

A surge protector cannot step up the power in the event of a power drop/brown out.
