I was a little surprised to see David Pogue use the term 'TiVo' on his blog (http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2006/11/09/airplane-technology-takes-flight/) in what I think is a generic use. I think he really means just DVR, but he's generally really careful.

Even big TiVo fans slip up sometimes I guess.

I do give my friends and family who have cable-co generic DVRs a hard time about saying "I TiVo'd this or that." Nope, you recorded it with your DVR!

The price of fame...

Right - hard to know if it's really a good or bad thing. The brand awareness is really great, but if it goes to far, it ceases to be seen as a brand and becomes a regular noun. I guess if it shows up in a dictionary, that's the real end.
