  • Moving Harddrives from one tivo to another

I've had success taking the HDs from one Series 2 Tivo and put them in another tivo. This allowed me to view preferences and access the shows one the drive moved to the tivo. (BTW both TCD540040).

I just got a Series 2 DT. I'd like to replace my old TCD540040 with the new Dual tuner Tivo TCD649080, but I don't want to lose my 300hrs of shows and more importantly all my preferences and season passes, etc.

My Question is: Can I take the two drives in the old device and put them in Dual Tuner without any negative effects to the drives or the Tivo?

You cannot move drives from one into the other, unfortunately,

You can network your TCD540 unit and move the contents to a PC and burn it to DVD, for example. You might also be able to move it back onto the new unit.

Does that mean, if I have a drive crash and no backup, I can throw the entire unit in the trash? Hard to believe

It wouldn't be trash, it would just need an image from another unit of the same model number. The models you listed above (540040 and 649080) don't have compatible software.
        Been here a long time . . .
