  • VISTA - PPP Connection with TIVO (HELP!)

I have been following the instructions on the web to use a null modem cable to connect my Tivo to my PC to get updates. I used those directions with my Series 1 on my XP box and it worked great. But now I have a new PC with (yuck) Vista.

After rebooting after changing the INF file, I check the registry entries cause the INF file doesn't install them well on Vista, so here are mine

Key Name: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion \Unimodem\DeviceSpecific\Communications cable between two computersStandard Modem Types)::Microsoft\Responses
    Class Name: <NO CLASS>
    Last Write Time: 4/29/2007 - 6:57 AM
    Value 0
    Name: CLIENT
    Type: REG_BINARY
    Data:
    00000000 08 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - 00 00 ..........

    Value 1
    Name: <h00>CLIENT
    Type: REG_BINARY
    Data:
    00000000 08 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - 00 00 ..........

    Value 2
    Name: CLIENTSERVER
    Type: REG_BINARY
    Data:
    00000000 02 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - 00 00 ..........

    Value 3
    Name: ~
    Type: REG_BINARY
    Data:
    00000000 08 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - 00 00 ..........

    Value 4
    Name: <h00>~
    Type: REG_BINARY
    Data:
    00000000 08 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - 00 00 ..........

The new connection wizard on Vista no longer has Setup advanced connection, but I figured out where to setup Incoming Connections:

    Open Network Connections
    press Alt Key
    click "File" pull down menu
    click "New Incoming Connection"

Then the rest appears the same as the XP instructions, so I follow them, and start TIVO update.

    Nothing Happens

Following the instructions, I remove the Incoming Connection, connect Hyperterminal to the Com Port, start TIVO update.

Hey TIVO is sending info, somehow I knew it would.

    Hmmmmm
Well maybe the Firewall is blocking it! So I recreate the Incoming Connection, and turn off the firewall.

    Still nothing happens.

Has Anyone Got PPP to work with Vista?

Sorry to say - we've stayed away from Vista around here. Maybe someone who got it to work can post.
    Been here a long time . . .
