  • Tivo, DirecTV and TiVoToGo

    Hi there,
    New forum member here...

I want to record programs from DirecTV, and then copy them to my computer.

I've come up with the following (theoretical) hardware & software solution.
    Is there a reason(s) it wouldn't work?

DirecTV receiver's AV outputs connected to TiVo Series2 DT's AV inputs.
Channel changing of DirecTV receiver by TiVo Series2 DT via IR.
TiVo Series2 DT networked thru Ethernet to router.
Computer with TiVoToGo networked to router.

Record program from DirecTV onto TiVo via normal TiVo interface.
(you can use a TiVo to control a DirecTV receiver, yes?)
Use TiVoToGo software to transfer program from TiVo HDD to computer HDD.

    Thanks

That will all work - lots of people do exactly that. Just be aware that the Dual Tuner unit can only record one channel at a time from DirecTV.
    Been here a long time . . .

I have been using that setup for years except my tivo is wireless to the router.

        follow up question

to use second TiVo Series2 unit, do you need to subscribe to a second TIVO service or can you simply use that machine to record to, from your DirectTV tivo machine?

        Thanks

Any Series 2 TiVo needs an active service agreement in order to function.
That's all there is to it!
