  • backup image won't boot on new replacement drive

I have a Hughes SDVR40 with a bad drive that won't boot past the "almost there" screen.
I've followed the instructions to run msbackup/restore to at least try to recover the bootable image from the bad drive. Those commands seem to work fine, but when I plug the new drive into my Tivo, it never gets past the "welcome" screen.
It seems strange that even the bad drive makes it a little further through the startup process.

I've also tried setting the new drive's jumper to master & cable-select when installed in the Tivo but neither works.

Is there any way to test the integrity of the backup image itself to see if it's just corrupt beyond repair? And if it is corrupted on the original disk, what can I do to restore it?

    Thanks.

That's almost definitely indicative of a bad image, but in some cases, that error message could be a bad motherboard. Since you get different behavior with each drive, it sounds much more like a software issue, and should be corrected with a replace kit from here:

Yes, but I already have a new drive - I dont want to order another one - I just need the software.
Since I was unsuccessful at copying the old drive over (way too many errors), I know I'm going to lose my old programs. But it's silly for me to buy yet another drive.

Here's another option...if you don't want to buy an entire kit, you can send a known, working drive to weaKnees for formatting service:

That's all there is to it!
