ERROR: backup target not large enough

getting error message backup target not large enough for entire backup by itself
and restore fails. both drives are 40 gigs. the older tivo drive reads 41110 and new drive reads 40021

Sounds right...if the old drive is 41110 and new drive reads 40021, then the new drive is not large enough. You'll need to get a 60gb or 80gb drive, or find an old 40gb Maxtor, which is just about the only drive that will have that size. Probably a bit risky to go the 40gb Maxtor route, because you could end up with a Maxtor that is still too small.
