  • HR10-250 with 6.3f version rebooting and freezing

My HR10-250 with 6.3f version is now rebooting and freezing and never did that before.

The hard drive is brand new from installed weeks before the new software update. After the update it feezes and reboots daily or less.

Is there a problem with the new software version 6.3f from directv?

Can this be a power supply problem or does rebooting and freezing while navigating menus only relate to a hard drive or motherboard problem?

Am I the only one or are others having this issue?

The strange thing is that its a new hard drive and now this started happening after the software update...

That's likely a drive problem. When new software gets on a TiVo drive, it changes the active system partition, and in this process, it can end up using a part of the drive that was previously damaged. We often see problems after OS upgrades, and a new drive pretty much always fixes them:

It just got a brand new drive 3-5 weeks ago.

This only started happening after the upgrade to 6.3f.

Has the 6.3f upgrade been causing everyone problems or at lease some people? I know its new so it takes time for people to start complaining and posting though.

We haven't seen a lot of complaints about it. If the drive is from us, email us and we can get it back here for a check.

It is happening to me several times a day on both units I have. I have a friend that this is happening to also. It started several weeks ago and continues at least 10 times a day. I wonder if this is DirecTv's way of trying to make you update to their HD units.

There have always been rumors of that, but there are plenty of us who have units that are definitely running strong . . .

I have a HR10-250 that I just activated last night (purchased it off of e-bay from a guy I met in person).

I don't know if my problem is related or not. Within minutes of turning it on and viewing a channel it starts to freeze and the show goes in and out. My software is still at version 6.3e

If I need a new drive, so be it, but I'm still a bit aggravated with the situation.

Does the picture going on/off happen 100% of the time? If you rewind, is it repeatable in the same place? If so, then you may have a bad motherboard.

Jeff, I don't know if your question is specifically for me or the two other guys, but my problem "seems" to be gone.

Last night before putting in a DVD I watched about an hour of SPEED and a program I Tivo'd and not once did it freeze...the live TV or during the Tivo program. This morning I watched another hour of something on SPEED and not once did it freeze.

                    Moses -

Jeff was referring to you - he was trying to determine if you have drive or tuner problems.

But if you're good for now, great!

I take back what I said above to Michael...it is happening once again.

I tried what you suggested...rewind when it happens and it is at the same point on the recording. But wouldn't that be the case as it would record that freeze?

When you see pixellation, try pausing on that station. Then switch tuners (down directional arrow) and change channels. Does the pixellation go away permanently? If so, you have a bad tuner.

Rewinding and seeing the problem duplicated in the same spot generally means the problem isn't drive-related.

Thanks, Jeff, I will try that.

However things have gotten even better since I last posted. During the day yesterday the box rebooted itself 3 times, and the "Please insert your access card" message kept popping up. I was on the phone with DTV for well over an hour twice yesterday fixing that message and trying to diagnose the problem. In addition, they want me to get the firmware version to 6.3f (6.3e is the current version on the unit). I don't know what good that will do. They also want to send me a new access card if that doesn't do it. The second gentleman at DTV also mentioned doing a "Clear and Delete Everything" to the HDD. I might try that tonight...what do I really have to loose at this point. He really seemed to know his stuff as he said it doesn't sound like a HDD problem, but more a tuner or motherboard problem. Hmmm...sounds familiar.

The guy I bought it from said he would send me a HDD from a different HR10-250 if we determine that is the problem.

The access card message is not from a bad drive. Probably a bad power supply, although it could be something else when you consider the pixellation as well.

OK, after trying for hours to connect I finally got the firmware up to 6.3f...and again with no success.

Jeff, I tried what you said above. Maybe I'm missing something I paused it when the freezing/pixelation started, switched channels (forgot to change channels). Was I supposed to switch channels on the original paused tuner or the second tuner?

Eitherway, when I was on the second tuner after a minute or two it started on that tuner as well.

If it's any consolation, the access card message has not happened at all today and it hasn't once rebooted.
