  • HD XL Unit Inop

Several weeks ago my 1 1/2 old HD XL Unit suddenly rebooted while I was watching a recorded program, the unit Cycles through the Initial Welcome Screen then the " Just a few minutes more" screen, following this it goes to the Green Screen of Death that looks to me to be the same presented following a Kick Start 57, this runs for about 2 mins then the system reboots and the cycle repeats again.

My initial assumption was that the Hard Drive had died and this was the conclusion of the TIVO tech support folks, there solution ( which seems to be arrived at all too quickly often ) was that the drive would have to be replaced..

In the meantime I pulled the drive from the unit and popped it into my external dock and to my surpise the drive spun rite up with no scary clicking noises etc. I then ran the WD Extended Test on the drive which reported no errors.

FWIW I also recently added a WD 1TB drive extender which seemed to install without incident and was working without incident.

I'm wondering what my next step should be..

    Any thoughts greatly appreciated.. Thanks

I'd try booting without the external, and then divorcing the external (instructions will be on-screen).

Those WD expanders seem to cause all sorts of problems . . .

I did try booting without the expander connected, it gave me a message indicating that it noticed the expander wasn't connected, I didn't go further yet...

If I do as you suggest what will I lose so far as recordings ? , the expander was only attached for a couple weeks. Would I only lose recording made since the expander was added ?..

Only any recording that is at least partially on the external drive. Recordings made since the external was attached aren't necessarily on the external.

Thanks for your help, my primary concern is the preservation of existing recordings.. The internal 1TB was very near full at the time the external WD was added, does the addition of the expander shift any of the existing recording ( pre-expander ) or only those after, said differently what are the chances that divorcing the expander will leave my pre expander recordings intact ...

          Thanks again...

Nope - nothing gets moved. So the only possibility of losing a recording is a recording made since the external was added.

Ok so I disconnected the external WD Drive and ReBooted, Got a Screen Noting the Expander was missing, .....Press Clear if you no longer wish to use the external storage....

Then a warning making sure I want to remove the external...3 Thumbs down.. Enter

Then Tivo Screen .."Removing External Storage Device,.. may take a while..don't power off etc....

After 5-10 mins the system reboots...

              Powering Up...

Almost done a few minutes more...

Then repeats back to the initial screen indicating it doesn't find the external drive again...

I've done this three times same result..What next ??

Huh. I really haven't seen that before. Is the eSATA cable itself disconnected?

Yes , External Drive ESATA Cable Disconnected... Do you think this could be a corrupted software problem,, and if so would the emergency reinstall kickstart help/ hurt...

Must be corrupted software. No reason not to try to the software reinstall kickstart, although that may not do the trick.

Got home this morning and attempted to run KS54 and KS52, the unit responds to the remote inasmuch as I get the blink of the green light the the yellow and red light however whether I then enter 52 or 54 its prior behavior repeats that is to say a cycle of , 1) Welcome Powering Up, 2) Just a few minutes more then 3) if the expander is connected it goes to GSOD then after a minute or so the cycle repeats or if the expander is not connected it notes its absence and asks if I want to remove it permanently, if I do the cycle previously described where it prompts for three thumbs down then enter then a screen saying it is removing the expander don't interupt etc, then a repeat of Welcome, Just a few minutes more, then expander not present...

Are the Kickstart routines part of the BIOS/ PROM or are they stored on Hard Drive ???

I'm thinking the next move may be either attempting to transfer drive contents with MFSTools dd copy, and or new drive instacake ...

                      HELP....

I have a blank WD 1.5 TB Drive Lying around should I be able to transfer from the 1TB drive using MFSTools DD, or must the drives be of identical size ??

You can DD to a larger drive without a problem. You won't unlock the extra space, however.

So much for that great idea, at least for the moment. I think I just fried the Hard drive controller board by plugging the 12v molex into the 5v pin, damn I was sure that the red wire was the 12V...

Was tinkering with WinMFS with the Tivo Drive in my external dock, FWIW I can successfully make backups of kernal and bootpage but the truncated backup locks up the program.. Don't know if this is indicative of anything.

I just ordered a new 1 TB West Dig WD10EVDS drive, should arrive Weds or Thurs. I will attempt the copy then and if unsuccessful then I guess I'm out of options to preserve/ recover my programming .. Anything else I could try at this point ??
