  • External drive not being recognized

I have an HR21/700 with a 2TB external drive as well as a Genie. Power went out for a couple seconds and now the HR 21 says capacity is 100% and none of the series that were set to record are listed anymore. This happened one other time and restarting the HR21 fixed the problem but this time I have tried restarting and powering off the DVR several times and it has not worked. Any other suggestions for a solution would be appreciated as the external drive was nearly filled.

Try shutting it all down, powering up the external for 30 seconds, and then powering the HR21 back up.
    Been here a long time . . .

Tried doing that a couple of times but it still is not showing the data from the external drive.

Sounds like the external is dead. Is it from us? What model is it? Does it have lights on it?

Are you sure the eSATA cable is securely in place on both ends?

Checked the cable and was not loose on either end. Tried restarting the drive and DVR but no difference.

Then it sounds like the drive or the case has a problem. How old is it?

[i would say it is probably about 8 years old. If I was to replace t with a new one is there any possibility of getting the data copied off of it?

Maybe - we'd really have to get it, and your DVR, here for testing and the potential copy.

Is there a way I can check for the dastardly using my laptop? If I have to send the equipment in what would be the time frame for doing that? How would I start the process?

That's what I get for typing on my phone! Was asking if there was a way I can check for useable data on the drive using my laptop?

Thanks for al of the info you have provided me!

                            Got it.

Nope - the data is all encrypted. If you attach the drive to anything but the DVR, the data can't be read.

With what I have told you so far what are the odds that anything will be retrievable from the old drive? If it is very unlikely then I would be better off just buying a new external drive rather than being without my DVR for several days.
