How do you tell how full the hard drive is before you get the message that you don't have enough room on the hard drive?

You can guess based on the size of your "recently deleted items" folder. The more stuff in there, the more free space you have.

It will only be there if you have software version 6.4a.

That's the issue. You need 6.4a. Leave your unit connected to a phone line and SAT cables, and it should update at some point.
