  • Using Series 3 as tuner with Cablecard without service

I have a Series 3 (HD TiVo) sitting unused after I upgraded to a Premiere and was wondering if I can use it as a tuner instead of the digital tuner from the cable company. I have an older Sony WEGA that uses Component cables for the HD signal. My HD TiVo also has the Component cables so I thought it would be a good use. I currently use a $5/mo digital converter that sends a HD signal but I have to use the COAX cable to get the signal to the TV as it is only COAX or HDMI and the TV won't accept HDMI.

So my question is can I swap the converter for a cable card from the cable company and use the Series 3 as the tuner and not just a pass-through device? I know I won't get the guide service from TiVo but that's okay as I use this TV as a monitor and not a DVR anyway.

    Thanks.

If the Series3 unit doesn't have service from TiVo, it won't work at all. And, if it doesn't have service, you can't subscribe it at this point.
