Swap Tivo Drives to test non working Tivo

I have a TCD540040 which died in an electrical surge. The hard drive beeps and makes bad noises. The screen gets stuck on the Welcome: powering up. I know i need to replace the drive, but am wondering on if other components were damaged. I have a working TCD649080. Can I put the working drive from the 649080 into the 540040 to see if I will boot? I just want to know if it will successfully boot utilizing the new drive and old other components. That way I know what to order. Am I on the right track.. Any suggestions.??
