Adding old Series 2 master Tivo as second drive to another old Tivo series 2

I have two Tivo Series 2's (both 40g). I want to put the hard drive of one into another so it has 2 hard drives(and 8og). Do have to reformat the drive before I put it in or can I just plug it in? (After having purchased the upgrade kit of course)
