  • TiVo stuck in endless reboot after power outage.

I have a DirecTV DVR R10 that I have upgraded the hard drive in previously.

It has worked great for over a year now.

Today we had several power outages and it came back up just fine several times.

The last time however, it got stuck in an endless reboot cycle.

It does the Welcome Screen, then shows the menu where you choose which type of satellite you have, then it restarts.

Could someone please point me in the right direction as to where I would start troubleshooting this?

I hope I don't lose all of the recorded data on there, but I may have no choice.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

That's almost definitely a hard drive problem. A "replace" kit for your model should fix the problem:

The programs are probably lost, sorry to say.

So if I don't purchase the kit, I'd basically have to replace the hard drive again with a new one and do the upgrade from my original hard drive like I did before?

Basically right, except that if the OS on the current drive is bad, copying a bad image to the new drive won't get you up and running again. You need good software on the new drive to fix this problem.

My original HD that came with the TiVo is still intact. Could I use the O/S from it to recover the device?

Yup - that should work, assuming the drive is in good shape.

Is there a way to back up the current recordings on this hard drive that has the possible bad O/S, then reload the O/S from the original TiVo drive to a new HD, then copy those recordings over to this new HD?

Nope - no way to combine those parts of each drive.

Shoot. That's not good. So those recording are somehow tied into the O/S and not viewable as separate media files by any software?

                    Exactly right.
