  • TCD240040 making strange noise

last night, our 5 year old Tivo TCD240040 started making some unusual noise. It's always been kind of noisy (in a disk drive constantly spinning way), but it got alot louder last night. Loud enough that I decided to unplug it for fear of something big failing. When I unplugged it, it was still recording a show and showing the playback on the screen - it didn't APPEAR that anything was wrong, it just SOUNDED like it was. I also spent a minute in the System Information screen and didn't see anything unusual (maybe only high temperature would be shown anyway, I don't know).

Does this sound like a hard drive about to die? Or would it be the fan? Or what?
I'd be willing to replace both to keep this thing running.

My baby has lifetime on it, so I want to fix it! I love my Tivo.

    Thanks,
    Andy

It really could be either - or both.

Here's a pretty easy test: stick a Q-tip in the fan grates at the back to stop the fan. Don't leave it for long, obviously. If the sound is gone, great, just get a new fan:

    If not, consider a drive:

      the noise stopped...

ok here's a little more information...
we left the Tivo unplugged overnight and when we turned it on today, there was no noise....and it still works.

does that lend itself to the fan being the culprit? for some reason I think if the hard drive was putting out noise that it would continue...

      thanks,
      Andy
