Why no network access for DirectTV Tivo?

Can anyone explain the rationale behind limiting network access to stand-alone Tivo's?

I have a DirecTV Tivo and a stand alone DVD recorder but it is a PIA to play a recorded program again just to get it to DVD. There any hacks that will allow me to move my recorded programs to my PC so I can store/burn them to DVD?

Basically, DTV boxes get digital signals that are very high quality. So to let units transfer those, at digital quality, they risk angering broadcasters.

Standalone boxes that can get network access are digitizing analog signals. Totally different story there.
