  • Update, for those who care:

CEO responded to email bright and early Monday morning.
Dude from CEO's office agreed to Fedex me a new access card midday Monday.
That card arrived 40 minutes ago, has been activated, and my DVR40 works again!

    Thanks again, Michael.

    • Excellent! Glad it did the trick!

Maybe tell the CEO's office to tell their techs about this solution?
      Been here a long time . . .

      • 28 month old TiVo HD XL (TCD658000). Was working yesterday A.M., but 9 hours later won't power on at all. When removing / re-attaching the power cord (directly to known good wall outlet), the front panel LEDs flash briefly, the fan does not spin, hard disk doesn't spin, and the monitor shows a black screen.

        Power supply?

        • Most likely, yes. Hard to be sure until you try one, though:

Thanks. One should be here tomorrow.

(I'm tempted to go grab a local "TiVo HD" that I see on craigslist for $50.)

            • That's not a bad price - but at that price, it might have the same problem . . .

                • Noise on Video

I have a power supply for a Samsung DirecTivo I got about a year ago from you guys. Over the last few months, the video output has been degrading, first with barely visible color variance, then with stronger and stronger diagonal lines of brighter/darker across the image. I thought it was the video output as the unit is getting to be quite old, but today, I added a small fan to help keep the CPU cool, as it tends to run quite hot these days. As soon as I added that, there was now a set of opposite diagonal bars across the video, as if it were noise being pumped onto the power supply.

Do I need a new PS? I hate to think that I'm dropping another $70 on a PS after only a year or so on this one. And since they're all pulls, what's the chance that the "new" one I get won't be just as bad?

                  • I'm guessing it's not a power supply, but may be a problem with your motherboard that manifests itself when the unit heats up.

Except, with the new fan I added, the motherboard CPU's never get over 35C. Before it was getting up to 50C at times, but the reaction to that was always the machine freezing or rebooting.

This is solely in the video output, and looks like a ground bias (like mains hum in audio.)

                      • Well, you can certainly try another power supply and see if you get a different scenario. I really doubt that if this were the power supply, that you'd get another with the same problems since it's not something we really see at all.

And you can return the power supply if it doesn't help:

                        • We had a power outage. Now all I get on our Series 2 TiVo is the grey screen that says "Welcome powering up". What can I do?

                          • Well, you likely have a bad drive or a bad power supply or both....so you can get the parts you need or a flat-fee repair, see:

                            • Possibe power supply issue?

We have an HR10-250 that has been in service since about 2006. Over the years, I have upgraded and replaced the drives without issue. In a recent storm, we had some power issues that cause the unit to reboot multiple times in quick succession. By the time I could unplug the unit, the disc image had been corrupted, and the unit would never come out of the initial boot screen. Yes, it should be on a UPS.

I rebaked the original disc and a brand new disc (the original 750G WD blue and a new 1TB WD blue, non AFS) with instant cake. Both discs show the same odd symptoms on starting up. The disc will spin up, and then spin down repeatedly. The power, rec and 480p lights are flashing on the front panel while this is happening. If left for a sufficient time, the disc will finally come up to speed and hold, and the unit will boot up cleanly.

This feels like a PS issue, but I've seen no mention of this particular symptom scanning through google.

                              Thoughts?

                              • hard to say for sure, but if you know it's not a drive, then I'd try a power supply.
