networking a TiVo with no service plan

I have a new TiVo HD with a one year TiVo plan. In the meantime I managed to repair/revive my old Series 2 which now does not have a TiVo plan.
The question is - can I use it on a separate TV and network with the HD unit so that I could transfer recordings between units; can I use it to download Photos from my PC and view on TV?

I found the answer to my question a few pages down on this forum; the answer is "NO" - a TiVo without a service plan can be used as a doorstop or fancy paperweight.

That's right. Without a service plan, the unit is basically a doorstop.
