Is DVR Service a must to record?

I'm a newbie on DVR.
I got a Directv R10 from a friend for free. Do I need to subscribe for the Tivo service from directv in order to be able to record? Or I still can record but without all the feature from Tivo? Thanks

You would need to subscribe to the DVR service from DIRECTV ($6/mo if it is not included with your programming package) to record and use the DVR/TiVo features.

oh, so if i don't want to incurr charges, i should just get a standard dvr to record from and no need to use the dirctv dvr, right?

Right - just get a generic DVR that works like a VCR. Make sure there's no monthly charge for it.

Been here a long time . . .
