  • Will this work for Me? DirecTV HD TiVO HR10-250

I've been searching for both an Upgraded Hard Drive and a 2nd 2-tuner Tivo.

Someone local to me has the following For Sale:
    DirecTV HD Receiver TiVO HR10-250

My Questions, because I do NOT have Hi-Def at my house:
will this Tivo unit work for me, using 'just' standard-definition?
how well does this unit perform?
any particular problems or issues associated with this unit?

If you would share any other Comments or Experiences you have with this model, I would greatly appreciated it.

    Thanks in advance,

    Scott

Yes, this unit will work as a standard definition DVR, but you may or may not be able to activate with DIRECTV. Activating used equipment can be hit or miss depending on the history of the unit.

So the DirecTV HR10-250 HD TiVo is NOT like the DirecTV DVR's then, right? More like a series 2 then, ie: 2-tuners that can Record at the same time AND the ability to watch something else from the Now Playing List?
Should I - with just Standard Definition - expect about 200 Hours of available 'space' with the HR10-250 Tivo?

That's right on all counts, except that the DirecTV DVRs can actually record two shows at once and still show something from the list of recorded shows. They have buffer limitations, but what you just described does work.

          Michael or Jeff,
a few days ago I read this 'reply' on a thread about a 500GB External Hard Drive for just $99.99:
"If this had esata, I'd be all over it, as an external drive for my DVR".

This is MY 500GB Seagate FreeAgent Pro hard drive, (that I'm NOT using!)

Question: Can I make that work with MY Tivo, Phillips DSR 704????

          Thanks for the time,

          Scott

No - externals don't work with that model at all.

Nope - the only TiVo DVRs that can use externals are the HD TiVos for cable
