IR Emitter Test?

I have a Sony SVR3000 that I just upgraded with a larger HD and I can't get the channel changing function to work. I'm not sure if the problem is the receiver (a DirecTV HD brand) or the IR emitter cable is bad. Is there a way to test the cable? Are they interchangeable in case I find another one from an old VHS machine? Thanks.

Yes - use a digital camera to take video when you change channels. You'll see the IR flashed if pointed at the video camera.
