Basic function question

Where can I get info about how dvr's work--ie. what is the Tivo recording to, if not a hard drive. and if so, how does it play pre-recorded shows at the same time that it is recording a new, different program. (Have series 1 and 2)

All TiVo DVRs do record to hard drives.
