  • Toshiba SD-H400 problems: Not necessarily a bad hard drive

I've had my Toshiba SD-H400 for about 7 years. 3 years ago the hard drive died and I replaced it with a new 300 GB Seagate drive from Weaknees which worked immediately.

A few weeks ago live TV stopped working. I could watch old shows, but not Live TV, and it couldn't record new shows. The message at the bottom of the screen said:
"Searching for signal on: Cable Box In."
"See 'Messages & Settings'/'Troubleshooting' for info."

I checked the troubleshooting page and it wasn't helpful.
I tried rebooting the Tivo, and it kept getting stuck on the "Almost There, just a few minute more" screen for hours at a time.
I left it alone for a week while I was out of town.
I tried rebooting it a few more times when I got back. Eventually, after about 10-20 reboots, it booted completely, but now it said my program info was about to run out. Each time I tried connecting the Tivo to update the program info I got an "S03" error.

I ordered a new drive from Weaknees and installed it. The first time I tried to boot it in got stuck on the "Almost There, just a few minute more" screen again.
I rebooted it several more times, eventually it came up, but when following the Guided Setup I couldn't get past the step where it tries to connect to Tivo to get program info. I'm using WiFi to connect to Tivo.

I'm not sure what me next step should be.

Did I install the hard drive wrong?
    Is it something else?

I'm tempted to just return the hard drive to Weaknees and order a DVR from my cable company, but I'd like to get my unit working again since it has lifetime service.

I just found the page on Weaknees about kickstart hard drive tests, so I will run through those on the old drive if I can.

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks.

I think you might have a motherboard problem given the issue with your 'no video in' problem. We have a flat-fee repair service for your unit, see:

      Hi. Thanks for responding!

I saw the flat fee repair service, but was disappointed to see that it cost nearly twice as much for my unit as most units.

It's expensive, but I guess I'll have to consider it to preserve the lifetime Tivo Plus service I have on my box.

Unfortunately, the parts for these units are expensive and they are a HUGE pain to take apart and repair. They are over-engineered.
