After several power outages in the area (major wind storm), my series 3 takes forever to boot past the powering up screen. I eventually get as far as rechecking my network info, connecting and updating (successful), pressing 'select' to continue and -> reboot to powering up screen. Is it dead?

Sounds like it's just a bad drive. Those are generally drive failure symptoms in a TiVo. Replacements are here:
