  • SWM8 System with Off Air HDTV Antenna-Help!

We are trying to troubleshoot a SWM system which also has a High Definition off-antenna diplexed into the system.

Our system is set up where by the satellite signal output from the SWM8 switch is diplexed with a signal from an off air HD antenna by a (supposedly SWM compatible) diplexer. The signal is then passed on a single RG6 to a SWM8 splitter, single output leg passed on a single RG6 to each TV location where the signal is then passed through a diplexer to extrapolate the satellite and off air signals.

Our problem is that as soon as we attach the off-air leg of the diplexer output to the ATSC tune of the TV, the IRD program channel changes (skewing the frequency in RF terms) and produces the “searching for satellite signal” image on the bottom right of the screen. If we remove the off air feed immediately the DSS will resume playing the original program and the “searching” box disappears. If we were to connect the RF feed and leave it there for any length of time, the DSS box crashes and needs to be completely rebooted (without diplexers) before it will work again.

We have spoken to two different companies as to how best correct this problem - each one giving a different answer.
    These have been as follows:

    1. You cannot inject an off air HD antenna signal into a SWM system. You need separate infrastructure with the addition of a Direct TV AM21 receiver at each tv location

    2. You need to inject the off-air signal into the off air input on the SMW8 switch, still run a single RG6 to each TV locationand then use diplexes at the TV locations to extrapolate the satellite and off air HD signals; one leg going to the IRD the other to the ATSC tuner on the TV.

Any assistance as to the correct approach as how best to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks
    Phil

The swm8 has the ota input from the antenna ? if so then a diplexer is only needed at the receiver to split the signal.

Owenf is right--the diplexer should be used at the receiver, and no diplexer is needed/used from the antenna into the coax. Also, we recommend the DIRECTV-approved SWM diplexer, see:
