  • Intermittent Problem with Legacy Ports

Last week I installed the SWM8 (replacing a Zinwell 6x8 Multiswitch), and have been getting excellent results on the 2 HR-20 receivers that are each connected to a SWM port (power goes to port 1). The three Legacy ports each now feed the following: a D-11 / 100, a D-11 / 50, and an R-15 DVR. The D-11 / 500 was just installed to replace an older Samsung TiVo that wouldn't get a clear picture from the Legacy port after the change of multiswitches (screen filled with horizontal lines over faint image).

The D-11 and R-15 units would work well for a while and then randomly start having short picture freezes (horizontal bars of pixellated video accompanied by high-pitched audio noise). No pattern could be found in this behavior.

I read elsewhere in this forum about a similar problem whose author was advised to check the grounding. My SWM did not come with grounding instructions - where can I find that info?

Also if there are any other possible issues that could affect my troubles, please advise. I am about to call in a specialist if I can't make this work myself.

The grounding would be for the satellite dish, and is really independent of the multiswitch.

Have you tried a different power supply on the SWM8? What model of power supply are you using?
    Been here a long time . . .

I am using the Power Inserter that Weak Knees supplied with the unit -- a DirecTV PI-28.

I also noticed in further reading on the forum that you once advised someone having trouble to re-boot the SWM. Does that entail cutting power to every connected receiver as well? Would you suggest I try that?

      Thanks!

Both the SWM and dish can and should be grounded. There are actually two grounding screws on the front top corner of the SWM.

Power cycling the SWM means unplugging everything and then powering on the units one by one.

          Still No Luck

Well, I have re-powered the entire system (after a 2-minute off cycle) bringing each receiver up one-at-a-time. Everything worked perfectly -- for about an hour. Then the poor signal once again cropped up affecting just the legacy ports as before. This good / no-good status will come and go with no pattern or discernible cause (like when the furnace or refrigerator clicks on / off). I am baffled.

If I check the signal strength (the on-screen numbers under SAT set-up), I see that each transponder channel will alternate between a sufficiently high number (85 - 100) and zero before moving on to the next channel. If I check either HD-DVR connected to the same multiswitch (but through the SWM ports) all signal strength numbers are stable while the problem is apparent on the Legacy receivers. Later, when everything is working again, all numbers on the Legacy receivers will match those on the HD-DVRs.

I am starting to believe that I have a faulty SWM8. How else can I explain this behavior, and because everything worked with the old multiswitch I have good confidence that the problem lies in the only thing that changed in my system -- the new SWM8.

          Any thoughts?
