DirecTV forced upgrade

Received a letter from Directv informing me that my HR10-250 will become obsolete and I must upgrade by 10/15/08 or face $150 fine in accordance with the lease addendum. They do not have a method of moving my saved HD movies onto the new drive. Is there a simple method of doing this? Can I save these movies onto another hard drive and watch them on my computer? What are my options? DirecTV's only suggestion was to copy them to a vcr. I apologize for the newbie questions.

I have never heard of any $150 fine. Are you sure you are understanding correctly?

There really is no easy way of getting content off, but you can get the new HD DVR from them and still watch what is recorded on the HR10; you just keep it connected to the TV, but have no satellite cables connected.
